Meria Loeks
FOUNDER & DIRECTOR
Midwife, RN, MA, LPCC
As a midwifery care recipient for her three sons’ births, Meria hopes everyone can have the choice of birth center midwifery care. A BA in psychology and education preceded her midwifery study through New Mexico’s direct entry program. Meria has an RN and MA in counseling psychology. In addition to a home birth practice she was also Mothering magazine’s Birth and Midwifery editor for five years. She was a New Mexico State Maternity Program Director and a counselor in Santa Fe High School’s teen pregnancy program.
Founding the birth center required some luck, a dogged perseverance, and trust that no matter how many hurdles, the birth center has a vital role in Santa Fe’s birth community. And grace. No small amount of grace.
When not fussing over the birth center, Meria is walking her two Bernese Mountain Dogs, studying French, practicing yoga and playing piano with her grandchildren.

Sara Chevalier
LEAD MIDWIFE
Licensed Midwife, New Mexico
Sara’s midwifery practice marries ancient traditions with modern techniques. Her ten years of midwifery experience began in southern California where she attended over 400 births at home, and in high volume birth centers-- working with traditionally trained and Certified Nurse midwives. Sara began working at Santa Fe Birth Center in 2021.
Sara hopes to create a gentler world through respectful births and postpartum support. She believes that birth and parenting are sacred and empowering and that all birthing families deserve individualized support in the transformational birth process.
In her down time Sara enjoys tending her flower garden and spending time with her four children --lovingly brought into the world by midwives-- and her small zoo of animals.
